I’m not even finished yet, but I love the way that in the description it talks about how Beth has to navigate drugs and alcohol, but they aren’t in the forefront of everything she does. She only takes the drugs when she thinks she needs them and the alchohol comes in way later.
I also love how the men respect her. Yeah it’s because of her intellect, but that’s what makes it sexier, like usually men doubt all smart women, but these men actually thank her for beating them because it makes them better, like that is hella attractive.
The subtle way that her friends mention her addictions and show that they care. Like even Benny, who she isn’t really friends with yet is concerned about her drinking and that just makes me happy that even though her mother isn’t with her anymore, she still has people who care about her.
It is my firm belief that Benny and Beth are soulmates or share a soul, whether that be platonic or romantic.
They both play full fucking chess games out in their head and Benny knew exactly what she would do if she was there despite barely knowing her and playing against her once a few years ago, and I’m only scratching the surface. They’re just so precious ??? Best chess nerds.
